Given the quality of the original, it'd be hard to imagine a sequel that would fail to live up to expectations. Since its announcement, Halo 2 has been heralded as the second coming (figuratively) and for all intents and purposes, this initial praise was warranted. What it got was a launch title that became 2001's Game of the Year, and now its successor is being prepared for a mid-November release. Like Father Like Son? Microsoft needed a killer app. At the very least, don't finish loading your crossbows and manning the catapults until we come to the end of it. Hit or miss, please stick with me for the remainder of the article. We're trying something a bit different and realize it may not sit well with everybody.

If, by chance, you're completely opposed to this feature, its purpose, or its prose, feel free to write in and let us know. And with that in mind, I'm left to ask: should you be interested in Halo 2? Should you be concerned? Does it trounce the competitive offerings on the PlayStation 2? Is it really worth purchasing an Xbox for on its own? I'll do my best to earnestly provide you with the insight necessary to answer those questions, and hopefully a few more I have yet to think of. I've brushed up on all the interviews, seen all the screens, viewed all the movies, and have conversed with a few of the developers. I've played the multiplayer part of the game extensively.

The point is to offer you (the PS2 gamer that happens to be like me, a fellow PS2 gamer) some honest perspective from a viewpoint more like yours than that always suspicious "theirs." And I'm here now to bluntly write about Halo 2.

I have a tendency to say things that are very quickly deemed to be totally inappropriate - even if they happen to be totally appropriate. In fact, Doug Perry's own personal brand of written Esperanto frightens me quite a bit. I've been working somewhere in this industry for about five years (at IGN for around three of them, if my memory serves correctly), and I do not write for the Xbox channel. What if we didn't preview them at all? What if we left the fact sheets, bulleted lists, movies, and interviews to the other channels altogether? What if we took a handful of AAA offerings from each platform, dished them out to competitive channels, and tried to offer genuinely disparate perspectives not yet influenced by hype and roots and loyalty? Hmmm? So what then you ask is the point of previewing another system's games on a channel whose audience likely doesn't care about them? And strangely enough, those most interested in Metroid are just a click or two away from the GameCube channel as well (which not coincidentally covers Metroid from time-to-time). So then why the hell aren't we?įor one, anyone wanting to know about Halo 2 should just direct themselves to the Xbox channel. Aren't we paid to inform? Can't we speak to our specific, platform-centric audiences about titles on other systems? Seems to be so. The conversation started to focus on the perpetuation of misinformation, and then we turned to the perceptibly high level of ignorance that some gamers exude - be it willful or accidental. Some time ago a few of us IGN editors were socializing, as odd as that may sound, and we spoke about some things that involved the greater this and that. We're not trying to dupe you, confuse you, rattle you, or coerce you onto the frontlines of what might become an endless war of hateful board posts and stinging email chains if this isn't handled with prudence. But don't runaway yet! We have more to say. No, Halo 2 isn't coming to the PlayStation 2, just the IGN channel. Our flag of truce is waving high in the breeze.
